THE GRANFONDO STELVIO SANTINI: AN EVENT DESIGNED ON THE ROADS THAT HAVE MADE THE HISTORY OF CYCLING
The Granfondo Stelvio Santini has been called one of the 10 best Granfondos in the world.
Starting from Bormio, you cycle down to Tirano and then up to Teglio. You then descend to the valley and return to Tirano. Reaching Tovo you will start to tackle one of the toughest climbs in Europe, the Mortirolo, where the gradients reach even 28%.
You then descend towards Grosio and back to Bormio where the Granfondo becomes myth and you prepare for the climb of 21 km leading to the top of the Stelvio Pass. By participating in the Granfondo Stelvio Santini you will live firsthand the emotions of an event designed on the roads that have made the history of cycling. Not so much a race, but a challenge against yourself, with your own limits and ambitions on the deadly ramps of the Mortirolo and the Stelvio legendary switchbacks. It takes legs, of course, but also mind and heart, to deal before with the Mortirolo and then the Stelvio Pass. It takes self-confidence, to never doubt of being able to cross the finish line, pedalling to the gates of heaven. It takes the ability to dream, to be conquered by the landscapes that you will cross. The heat in the valley and the cold wind of the final hairpin bends, between two walls of snow. Historical ascents where you will have to use your energy cleverly and dizzying descents where you must forget fear. And, all around, wood scents, silence and the spectacular alpine scenery of the high Valtellina.
Here, in 1953, with a memorable climb, Fausto Coppi won his last Tour of Italy. In honor of this great champion, the highest point reached by the Corsa Rosa is still called “Cima Coppi”. The Stelvio Santini the Granfondo is a long emotion, made of kilometers, bends, sweat, courage, hard work, determination, challenge and a great, infinite, priceless satisfaction when you will end – up there on the top of the Stelvio at 2758 meters – your legendary unique day on the pedals.
